People present there prayed for those who got killed and stood together in a moment of silence.

I want to say that my son was a regular young man of 20 y.o. who always believed that Lugansk will be liberated. And I think it is going to be that way. Thank you for protecting the unity of Ukraine. Ukraine is alive and it’s impossible to divide it. We must appreciate it, young men proved that paying with their lives.

– Mother of one of the killed border guards.

Border guards are 1st who meet the enemy on the border. I have no doubts that none of us was ready for this situation. For many of us that was a shock. We must appreciate those suns, husbands and fathers who didn’t step back. I understand that was unequal battle. The enemy had armored vehicles and helicopters. Could our boys retreat? Yes, sure they could. And I don’t know if any of us would have words to judge them for that. But they didn’t retreat and the enemy had to run away. They protected us. I put my head down in front of their friends and relatives. Sure, we can’t return those boys. But this should be a lesson for all of us. I want to say sorry to their parents, sorry that we couldn’t save your children.

– George Tuka, the head of Lugansk Region.
